It truly is a great example to showcase how hemp can be used easily to create a sustainable, easy and production line orientated way of building as most of the building can be built year round indoors and off site. Sweden is in such dire need of affordable housing and LOTS of it, the housing crisis is one of the first things that became evident to me when moving here. One of the preconditions to moving over was that we had a place setup to move into as you cannot simply view a bunch of flats and decide which you like best, as it is in a lots of countries.
But it feels like we need a big boost to truly push hempcrete building in Sweden in a direction that can be adapted by big players like Skanska and Serneke. I met with Peter Holmdahl recently to dig a bit deeper into what that next step may be. As owner of House of Hemp Sweden Peter migrates between Sweden and the south of France, a country which has a long and more sane relationship with hemp. France continues to build with hemp and uses techniques that are time and cost efficient. It’s is from France that Peter has gained a lot of his knowledge from the best in the hemp building business. It is with this and many years of both sharing knowledge via hemp courses and continuously expanding his own through innovation think-tanks and conferences that will take Sweden to the next step in hemp building. Peter made it clear also that house of hemp will only use approved materials to ensure quality and consistency of build and though the end goal is to use local, this will only be done once they have been approved.
BCB created the first formulated limes, which are now approved by European building lime standard NF EN 459, and Chanvribat, the first hemp to meet building quality standards. [source] http://www.bcb-tradical.com/en/tradical-hempcrete/?lang=en
A showcase of hemp construction is in the works in Gothenburg which will showcase even more of hemp’s true potential. “Studio 360 is a holistic perspective on how we can build the future together today. There will be about 360 m2 food studio ideas and given the opportunity to grow new contacts.
This will be a concept that is based on social, economic and ecological sustainability. Here will be held courses in local cooking, lectures, team building, etc.
In the construction phase, we learn to build sustainable, healthy houses. If you are a company or a private person who is passionate about innovative ideas then we welcome you to take part of the project.”
