What does it mean to be free. Freedom of movement, freedom of speech, freedom to love who we want, freedom to privacy, freedom to provide food for ourselves. Most of our freedoms have been taken from us slowly throughout history. Do we have freedom to ingest what we want into our bodies? If a stranger on the street came up to you and said they would lock you up if you chose to ingest something they did not approve of you would laugh in their face and walk away, freedom of movement, freedom of choice. So that’s where governments come in, the faceless, all powerful entities who have the might of armies and prisons behind them. Prescription drug abuse causes the largest percentage of deaths from drug overdosing. [1] Of the 22,400 drug overdose deaths in the US in 2005, opioid painkillers were the most commonly found drug, accounting for 38.2% of these deaths. Sure these deaths must have been tragic to the families of the loved ones lost, but these are civilian casualties to multibillion dollar corporations, in 2014, total pharmaceutical revenues worldwide had exceeded one trillion U.S. dollars for the first time. [2] Marijuana arrests now account for over half of all drug arrests in the United States. Of the 8.2 million marijuana arrests between 2001 and 2010, 88% were for simply having marijuana. Nationwide, the arrest data revealed one consistent trend: significant racial bias. Despite roughly equal usage rates, Blacks are 3.73 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana. How many people have died of cannabis overdoses? A couple thousand, a few hundred? Not one. Not one recorded death.
